The Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus is a central element in the history and culture of the city of Munich.
Conceived and realized in the circle of friends around the founding fathers, Franz von Lenbach, Ferdinand von Miller und Gabriel von Seidl, the Kuenstlerhaus Munich has always been a meeting place of artists and society.
We invite you to learn more about the history and the presence of the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus.
“The house shall be a gathering place for all Munich artists, a centre for cheerfulness, advice and earnest deed …" – this was the wording of the document which was read and subsequently immured at the laying of the foundation stone of the Münchner Künstlerhaus (‘Munich House of Artists’) in 1893.
The Kuenstlerhaus became a central meeting place for the artist community in Munich, but in the Second World War most of the building was destroyed. Operated by the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus Foundation today, the house was rebuilt and restored in many years of arduous work. Learn more.
In 2001, ownership of the Kuenstlerhaus was transferred to the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus Foundation, the statutes of which include the preservation and maintenance of the building as well as the promotion of art and culture.
The foundation is financed by the letting of the premises and is also dependent on contributions from private donors for its work.
Further information on the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus Foundation.
In 1911, eleven years after the opening of the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus, the building was transferred to the Kuenstlerhaus Association. Among its members, there were famous Munich artists such as Ferdinand von Miller, Franz von Lenbach, Gabriel von Seidl, Lorenz Gedon and many more.
Since the Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus Foundation assumed ownership of the house in 2001, it has been acting as a ‘friends’ association’.
Here you find further information on the Kuenstlerhaus Association.
The Muenchner Kuenstlerhaus Foundation promotes art and culture and is responsible for maintaining the building at Lenbachplatz.
Both tasks present us with new organizational and financial challenges each year, as we do not receive regular public funds. This is why we need your help.
